Bitter Cold Bites Carolinas

The coldest air Charlotte has seen since mid-January arrives tonight.

Brr! The Queen City is waking up to what is only its second freezing morning in three weeks, and it only gets colder from here. High pressure to our northwest will continue to pump frigid air into the Carolinas as highs struggle to clear the 30s and 40s across the board. The northwesterly flow will allow for another round of snow showers in the High Country; totals should remain under an inch. Wind gusts may approach 30 mph to the northwest of the Metro. Plentiful sunshine will carry through midweek for the Piedmont and Foothills as highs slowly recover.

Our next chance for rain lies at the end of the workweek as an area of low pressure develops east of the Rockies. The system will pick up moisture from the Gulf as it swings eastward over the following days. Shower chances will linger throughout the weekend; while totals don’t look particularly impressive right now, we’ll take whatever we can get. Despite the clouds and rain, highs will likely bump up slightly above average over the weekend in the 50s and 60s. Models suggest leftover moisture will stick around into early next week before a separate cold front dries us out.
