CHARLOTTE, N.C. β University City Partners announces and invites seasoned and new runners and spirited spectators to conquer the yearβs first race in University City. The third annual New Yearβs Day 5K, on January 1, 2024, will start at The Shoppes at University Place at 10 a.m. and end with a celebration featuring drinks, food and fun for all ages. βThis annual event is a testament to our 20-year commitment to creating a healthier, more vibrant community through multi-use pathways and extensive 14 miles of greenway, encouraging our residents and visitors to maintain a healthy lifestyle throughout the year right in their backyard,β said CEO of University City Partners Keith Stanley. βWe have a lot of plans for the future and are thankful that this year, our NYD5K will benefit the University City Foundation, helping us advance the cityβs development, activate on local projects in the area and host community-building events like this.β
Unveiling a new course, 5K runners will make their way to JW Clay Drive, where a portion will be shut down to enter Barton Creek Greenway, continue into Mallard Creek Greenway and onto Toby Creek Greenway, where they will finish the last leg, taking in the beautiful campus of UNC Charlotte to the finish line on Robert Snyder Road.
Race day schedule:
8:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.: Packet and bag drop pick up
Pre-packet pick-up is available on December 30 from 4 – 7 p.m. at Run For Your Life at 1816 W. Arbors Dr.
10:00 a.m.: Adult 5K race starts
11:00 a.m.: Kidβs Dash starts near the finish line
11:00 a.m.: Awards and prizes ceremony
10:00 a.m. – 12 p.m.: Brunch and post-race party!
Adult runners can register for the 5K for $40 through November 30 or $45 through race day and receive a reusable, collapsible cup and performance NYD5K shirt. There will also be the option to upgrade to VIP for an extra $19 to escape the crisp morning air in a heated tent and enjoy complimentary mimosas served in a souvenir glass. After the 5K, there will be a quarter-mile Kidβs Dash starting at 11:00 a.m., where children can take home a t-shirt when they register before the race for $10. Spectator passes are also available for $15, providing access to the post-race celebrations, including food and beverages from local vendors.
