New Law Outlaws Street Takeovers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A brand new law was implemented on Friday to help local police crack down on street takeovers.

The law makes street takeovers illegal and carries a misdemeanor charge along with a fine of at least $1,000 for the first offense. The second violation escalates to a felony.

This new law allows police to seize vehicles for as long as the case is in the court system.

“CMPD will actively enforce this new street takeover law to the fullest extent in our jurisdiction,” CMPD Lt. Kevin Pietrus said. “Do not come to Charlotte and participate in these activities. We will arrest you, and we will seize your car.”

Bystanders who gather to watch street takeovers may also be charged under this new law.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say street takeovers exploded in the area in 2022. Since then, police have been working on handling these street takeovers following complaints from the community.

Police say they have made 29 arrests and have towed 94 vehicles since last February.
