Terror Inside South End Apartment: Newly Released Police Body Cam Moment Shows Frightening Encounter

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Newly released police body cam video shows officers rush to the scene of a South End apartment, after a 911 call from a woman who said she needed help. It happened on August 20th just before 8 AM. Charlotte firefighters and officers knocked on the apartment, tried to unlock the door, and then after hearing screaming and a gun shot, they kick it down.

You can see the door had been barricaded from the inside. Officers Tyler Bourque and Shawn McMichael enter the apartment. The officers rush to the bedroom, and find a man with a gun. He points it at officers and then drops it. As the officers try to separate the man from the gun, they scuffle. Their body cameras fall off. The suspect then swings a knife at Officer McMichael, badly injuring him. Officer Bourque then fires his weapon, hitting the man. The man died at the scene. The woman who called for help was shot in the arm and treated for her injuries. Officers also secured a dog in the apartment, and had animal control come take the animal to safety. Two firearms and two knives were recovered from the scene.

The SBI, the District Attorney, and CMPD’s internal affairs are still investigating. Chief Johnny Jennings released a statement saying in part, “I am so proud of the lifesaving, heroic actions of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s officers during this incident…Officers Bourque and McMichael rose to their training, putting their lives in extreme danger for the sake of the protection of innocent life. I am thankful that Officer McMichael was able to fully recover from the serious injury that he sustained, and I pray for the continued safety of every CMPD officer.”
