The Salvation Army Kicked Off Its Annual Toy Distribution Friday, December 15th

Charlotte, N.C. – The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Dec. 15 to officially open its Christmas Center (1831 N. Tryon Street, West Building). The Salvation Army Christmas Center serves as the hub where more than 2,500 families who registered to receive help for their children will return to receive their gifts.

This year, more than 5,000 children in need (ages 12 and younger), as well as more than 1,500 senior citizens, will receive gifts thanks to the generosity of the community.

Following the ceremony, approximately 50 families every 30 minutes will come through the Christmas Center to receive gifts, greeted by the sounds of Christmas carols and warm welcomes of Salvation Army employees and a host of community volunteers.

Distribution begins on Friday by appointment, and will conclude on Tuesday, Dec. 19.

“This community has a reputation on springing into action when there’s a need,” said Major Jason Burns, Area Commander for The Salvation Army of Greater Charlotte. “As we begin our Angel Tree gift distribution, there’s no better picture to symbolize the community coming together to serve those who need us most. Hundreds of families will experience hope and joy this Christmas thanks to the efforts of so many volunteers, donors and community partners.”

Each family will also receive a free box of food, courtesy of Atrium Health, and will also have the opportunity to receive a bike, courtesy of The Spokes Group.

Each Christmas, families register with The Salvation Army during the month of October. Each child’s name is placed on a tag, which can then be found on the various Angel Trees in malls or other places of business. “Angels” not adopted or returned by individuals or corporations are able to receive gifts thanks to generous financial donations and numerous toy drives.
