Local Broadcaster Retires After Over 60 Years In The Industry
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Put someone behind a microphone and they can talk to thousands. Put the right person behind that microphone and they seem to talk with each listener individually.
Such is the story of Pat Shannon, a beloved Iredell County broadcaster who retired today after more than sixty years in the business.
“You give people hope that they can make it another day,” one caller said.
Shannon hosted HomeAd on WSIC and WDSL. It can be likened to an on-air yard sale.
“You bring a lot of people joy and you really provide a service and I can tell how loved you are,” another caller said.
While Shannon started and ended at WSIC, he also had a career in the US Air Force as a broadcaster and a recruiter.
“It’s just really wonderful to have the calls and have the people. I do hope in some way over the years, whatever I did here, bring them a little bit of happiness and maybe a little bit of humor.”
He’s one of those broadcasters who became everyone’s friend even if you never called the show.
“Pat has really pushed for that culture of genuine and being true to yourself, and it’s been amazing to watch,” owner of WSIC Justin Ckezepis said.
In his retirement, Pat will be focused on spending time with his wife Sonja.
The HomeAd Show will continue in 2024 with host Brian Summers. As a long-time listener, he says it’s an honor to fill the slot.
