Newton Woman Sentenced For Trafficking Opiates

NEWTON, N.C. – A woman in Newton, North Carolina was sentenced to six to eight years in prison for trafficking fentanyl.

Alexa Jo Carnes, 36, entered her plea and was sentenced on Wednesday, January 3rd.

Carnes was originally arrested on October 17th, 2022 during a traffic stop. 

Police pulled over a vehicle for an expired tag. Carnes was in the front right passenger seat. She exited the vehicle, and officers found narcotics in her seat.

Police further searched the vehicle and found drug paraphernalia in the center console and front passenger door pocket.

Carnes was arrested and later told officers that she had three plastic baggies containing narcotics on her.

Carnes will serve her sentence at the North Carolina Division of Adult Corrections. She will also be required to pay a $50,000 fine.
