A Taste Of Winter For The Carolinas
Most areas outside of the mountains won't see snow, but we're all getting in on the coldest air we've seen in over a year by midweek.
Get ready for a strong shot of winter as we head into the heart of January. A weak area of low pressure is trudging its way through the Carolinas, bringing rain and snow showers to areas northwest of the Metro. Most areas outside of the mountains will just see rain, but a few spots along and north of I-40 may see some flakes as the precipitation begins. Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for the High Country, which could end up with a widespread 1-3″ of the white stuff. Locally higher amounts above 4500′ may approach 8″. Most of the moisture moves out shortly after sunset, although a few showers may linger overnight into Tuesday morning.
More rain showers arrive south and east of the Metro as the system moves out by Tuesday afternoon. Behind the storm comes extremely cold air – likely the coldest most have seen in over a year. Wind chills will dip into the teens, single digits, and subzeroes Wednesday morning as highs struggle to get out of the 20s and 30s for our Hump Day. Temperatures recover slightly heading into Thursday before another rain-and-snow-making system sweeps in by Friday morning. Accumulations don’t look impressive with this system either, but we’ll need to watch the end of the workweek as the forecast becomes clearer. Dry, frigid air returns by the weekend.
