Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control Issues Cold Weather Advisory For Pet Owners

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – As temperatures in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region are expected to drop below freezing over the next few days, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control
(ACC) urges pet owners to take special precautions to ensure the well-being of their companions.

Bring Outdoor Pets Inside

In light of the impending cold weather, ACC emphasizes the importance of bringing outdoor pets indoors to protect them from the harsh conditions. If this is not feasible, consider alternative shelter options like a heated garage or basement, ensuring proper bedding or straw is used. Do not use blankets or comforters as they hold in moisture and stay cold. Pet owners are also advised to be vigilant and considerate of any special needs or medical issues their pets may have.

“The safety and health of our pets are paramount, especially during extreme weather conditions,” said Melissa Knicely, spokesperson for Charlotte-Mecklenburg ACC. “As temperatures plummet, bringing outdoor pets inside becomes crucial to shield them from the cold. Additionally, it’s vital for pet owners to be aware of any unique requirements or medical concerns their pets may have.”

ACC Urges Pet Owners To Prioritize The Safety And Well-being Of Their Pets By Taking The Following Precautions:

Consider breed and coat type: Be mindful of your dog’s breed and fur coat type when taking them outdoors. Some breeds are more susceptible to cold temperatures, and dog coats can provide additional protection.

Paw care and inspection: After outdoor activities, inspect your dog’s paws for any signs of ice or exposure to treated surfaces. Clean their paws thoroughly with warm water and mild soap. Choose pet-friendly ice melt to ensure their safety.

Providing adequate shelter: For outdoor pets, create a sheltered space well-bedded with dry straw, shavings, or blanket strips that trap warm air. Check bedding regularly and provide extra food to generate body heat.

Antifreeze awareness: Be cautious of antifreeze, which is deadly to pets. Wash away any spills promptly, especially in garages or driveways.

Water bowl maintenance: Ensure the outdoor water bowls do not freeze. Break up any ice and change the water frequently to keep pets well-hydrated.

Specific Advice For Different Pets:

Cats: While cats prefer indoor warmth, outdoor cats pose risks, especially around car engines. Exercise caution to prevent injuries or fatalities.

Puppies: Puppies may struggle with the cold, affecting housebreaking. Consider paper-training indoors if sensitivity to weather is observed.

Dog outerwear: Breeds with short coats such as bully breeds, greyhounds and chihuahuas, benefit from sweaters or coats. Avoid shaving dogs down to the skin during winter.

Grass for potty breaks: For dogs reluctant to relieve themselves in the snow, use a black plastic or cardboard liner in a grassy area before expected precipitation. Remove it after the weather clears for a designated potty area.
