Charlotte Doctor Discusses Benefits Of Cold Plunge
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A quick dip in a 53 degree pool, in the middle of Winter, is not ideal for most. For Joe Ricco, it’s actually a little warm.
About a year ago, Ricco began each winter morning in the pool. Replacing hot coffee with a cold plunge.
“I think it’s been amazing, if nothing else, the mental discipline of just doing something you don’t want to do,” explained Ricco.
Novant Health’s Dr. Payton Fennell believes the cold plunge health fad is here to stay, citing both mental and physical benefits.
“There is a surge of dopamine that takes place after any plunge and that increases your alertness. It makes you feel better about yourself,” said Dr. Fennell.
Putting your body in miserably cold temperatures have physical effects beyond a lot of goosebumps. Dr. Fennell says the chilly water causes your muscles and skin to contract and then dilate once you get out. That process improves your immune system, promotes building of muscles and burning of fat as your body regulates temperature.
Dr. Fennell suggests consulting with you doctor if you’re thinking about trying a cold plunge. He also says to ease your body to the cold water by starting at a higher temperature and slowly dropping in temps with each use.
Actors, pro wrestlers, and fitness enthusiasts have hopped on the cold plunge train. Businesses around Charlotte are no different. The Invigory -South End introduced a contrast therapy as the demand for a cold plunge from clients grew.
“Since we brought it in around September, it’s been very, very popular. So, it’s been very good for our business,” said The Invigory – South End owner Dave Statis.
Statis says the clientele ranges from from the athlete in their early 20’s to someone in their 50’s or 60’s .
“Once they try the treatment for the first time, we’re now seeing that progression of more of a routine because they’re feeling the benefits,” explained Statis.
Both Statis and Dr. Fennell suggest spending 11 minutes in the cold plunge in total through out the week for optimal benefits.
