CMS Losing Federal Funding For The 2024-2025 School Year
CHARLOTTE –Charlotte Mecklenburg school board members met on Monday night to discuss the upcoming budget for the 24-25 school year.
The plan currently will cut 190 million dollars, 60 million of that being attached to people.
“So while this is really tough to handle,” says Superintendent Dr Crystal Hill, “the way that we’ve organized everything we are planning, that it will be the very best impact for our students and also preserving our staff as well.”
Esser funds are being removed from the cms budget. Esser assisted public schools with funding during the pandemic. The US Department of Health and Human Services declared the COVID-19 pandemic officially over, meaning those pandemic conditions no longer exist.
Now, the district is planning to cut 768 Esser funded positions across Charlotte Mecklenburg schools.
The district currently has 990 vacancies. District leadership is encouraging staff whose jobs are eliminated due to the loss of Esser funding to apply for one of those openings.
“In essence, we will be using our vacancies to offset the cuts,” says Hill.
