Charlotte Man Wins $200k Lotto Scratch Off, Plans To Donate Winnings To His Charity
CHARLOTTE, NC — We often ask the question, “what would you do if you won the lottery?” We often here the same responses: buy a house, nice cars or travel the world. Rarely do we hear someone say, they’d donate the money to charity. It’s even more rare when that person follows through with it.
That’s exactly what Barry Shipp plans to do after winning $200,000 on a scratch off.
“I saw zero and another zero, and then I seen a comma and another zero and another zero,” continues Shipp, “I said, this can’t be a winner.”
It was. $200,000 from a $5 scratcher. $143,000 after taxes.
“I’m going to donate a large part of the the winnings to my nonprofit Pivot Point,” said Shipp.
Shipp’s nonprofit aims to help the homeless in our community with small homes.
“Everybody’s talking about affordable housing and low income housing. This is for no income,” explained Shipp.
His desire to help those down on their luck, comes from a place of empathy. At one point, Shipp was also homeless
“I know that a person walking through those doors and they’re able to sit down every night, they don’t feel like they’re homeless anymore,” Shipp said.
The lotto winnings Shipp plans to donate will be enough to get his idea off the ground. A simple scratch that changed a life and maybe many others.
“It’s going to make sure that we have enough capital to build at least six more. That will give us a village,” explained Shipp of his donation.
