Endangered Right Whale Found Dead Off Massachusetts Coast

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the world's most endangered large whale species.

NOAA Fisheries say a North Atlantic right whale was found dead on a Martha’s Vineyard beach with chronic entanglement.

The whale was identified by scientists as a calf born during the 2021 calving season.

A necropsy was performed early this month which found “chronic entanglement, with rope deeply embedded in the tail, and thin body condition” according to NOAA Fisheries. As of today, full necropsy results are still pending.
