Lunar lander Odysseus landed on the Moon Thursday evening one week after launching from the Kennedy Space Center. This is the first American spacecraft to do so since 1972!
There were times of uncertainty during the mission, but once the spacecraft made a successful landing Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus said, “I know this was a nail-biter, but we are on the surface, and we are transmitting.”
Odysseus is carrying commercial cargo and NASA instruments. These instruments will prepare us for future human exploration of the Moon.
This landing marks the first touchdown by a U.S. built spacecraft since 1972 – the Apollo 17 mission.
