A Gaston County community is rallying together to show support for the family of a middle school student who died suddenly Thursday morning.

The little boy, who police have not identified, fell unconscious on a school bus at Holbrook Middle School around 8 a.m.  The family set up a Gofundme account to raise money for his funeral.  It was created 24 hours ago and has already collected over $37,000.

Authorities are still awaiting a medical examiner’s report to determine how the boy died.  They believe a previously unknown medical condition may have caused his death.

LOWELL, N.C. – A student at Holbrook Middle School died at a hospital after passing out on a school bus on Thursday morning.

Authorities say the student may have died due to a previously unknown medical condition. A drug overdose isn’t a likely cause of death, as officials administered Narcan at the hospital and were unsuccessful.

“This is devastating news for our school family, and we are heartbroken,” Holbrook Middle School principal Torben Ross said. “We have counselors and additional staff here to provide support for our students as we know the time ahead of us will be difficult. Please keep the student’s family, friends, and classmates in your thoughts and prayers. I know that all of us will come together to support our school family as we mourn the loss of one of our very own.”

The student fell unconscious on a school bus around 8 a.m. on Thursday, February 29th.

A School Resource Officer at the school attempted to perform life-saving efforts. The student was taken to Caromont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia where they later died.

Officials said the student’s name will not be released.

No charges are expected to be filed.
