Albemarle Homicide Suspect Turns Himself In

ALBEMARLE, N.C. – The suspect wanted after a man was shot and killed at an Albemarle apartment on Friday is now in custody, police said.

Otis Eugene Burns, 49, turned himself in on Saturday morning. He was charged with first-degree murder, possession of a firearm by a felon and discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling.

The shooting happened at approximately 1 a.m. on Friday, March 1st at an apartment complex on Elizabeth Avenue. Officers responded for a well-being check but found the victim, 47-year-old Duane Lamont Perry, dead from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said Perry was a visitor and not a resident at the apartment when the shooting occurred.

This is the first homicide in Albemarle since September of 2023.
