Fire Destroys Building At North Carolina Summer Camp

HENDERSONVILLE, N.C. – Investigators say it could be months before we know what sparked a fire at a summer camp in Hendersonville.

Flames ripped through and destroyed a 15,000 square foot building at Camp Wayfarer. It happened early Friday morning. Firefighters say there was no one inside the building at the time, and no injuries are being reported.

The owners, who bought the camp nearly 32 years ago, say some of the items lost are priceless. “(The) hardest thing for me is we have, like, 300 chairs that the kids paint ever since we started the camp back in ’92 and the dining hall is just full of these beautiful chairs that first graders to high school kids paint. They sit in them every year when they come back to camp,” says camp owner Jim Wilson, tearfully.

Firefighters say a transformer likely the cause of the explosion. Crews are waiting until the temperature cools down outside to start the bulk of that investigation.
