Union County Sergeant Arrested For Allowing Inmate To Use Phone

MONROE, N.C. – The Union County Sheriff’s Office arrested and terminated a Detention Division Sergeant after he allowed an inmate to use a cellphone.

The arrest comes amidst an ongoing investigation into misconduct by a Union County Sheriff’s Office employee.

Anthony Humphrey allegedly provided his county-issued cell phone to a current inmate at the Union County Detention Center.

Officials say the inmate used the cell phone to make numerous unauthorized calls using Humphrey’s phone.

Humphrey was charged with four felonious counts of furnishing a mobile device to an inmate. He was terminated following his arrest.

“As law enforcement officers, we swear an oath to protect and serve our community and must always maintain impeccable integrity,” Sheriff Eddie Cathey said. “I asked the NCSBI to lead this investigation to ensure that our residents know that I am committed to transparency and accountability, especially when it involves one of my own employees.

“While this is a sad day for my office, I remain extremely proud of all the hardworking men and women of the UCSO who serve our community admirably each day.”

Humphrey worked for the Union County Sheriff’s Office since 2004.
