Gastonia Woman Pleads Guilty For COVID-19 Wire Fraud Scheme

GASTONIA, N.C. – A Gastonia woman pleaded guilty to a wire fraud charge after fraudulently acquiring over $125,000 in COVID-19 relief funds.

Kelly Bree Mosley, 48, entered her guilty plea on Friday, March 29th.

From May 2020 to April 2021, Mosley submitted false information to apply for loans with two programs, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Program and the Paycheck Protection Program.

To get these loans, Mosley submitted applications, using her own name, for fake event planning businesses. Her applications contained fictitious information, such as payroll expenses, number of employees, gross revenues, and operating costs.

Officials said Mosley acquired approximately $125,317 in COVID-19 pandemic relief funds. She agreed to use the funds as permitted under the programs’ stipulations.

However, court documents said Mosley used the money for plastic surgery, to trade in foreign currency, and pay for bills.

A wire fraud charge carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence.

Mosley is out on bond. Her sentence will be determined by a federal judge at a later date.
