Original Story (Posted: April 1, 2024):
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A social media account is viral for posting videos of a driver goading police officers to follow before taking off at high speeds with police unable to chase.
The Instagram page’s handle is “thestolenz06”. The page has hundreds of thousands of likes. Nearly each video, shows the driver taunting officers to pull them over only to drive off.
“Disgusting to think that people have the audacity to do that and think that it’s okay to to put others at risk on the streets,” said Daniel Redford.
Redford is the President of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police. He says his biggest fear is the next video ends in injury or death.
“It’s just frustrating. But really goes to show, uh, you know, just how much of a of an idiot this guy is,” explained Redford.
The latest viral video wasn’t posted by “thestolenz06” but several users tagged that handle claiming it’s the same driver. That video appears to show an officer attempting to kick in the window of the car. The driver eventually gets away.
Redford pointed to a different video of the driver going past the officer parked on a median. Speeding off as flames shoot from the back of the car. The driver then makes an illegal u turn to go past the officer again.
“You clearly see that he’s going around baiting officers just for this,” Redford said.
One of the hashtags for this video reads #dontchase. Likely referring to CMPD’s pursuit policy. Which calls for officers to chase only in extreme dangers to life situations like shootings, homicides, and armed robbery. Redford says a traffic violation doesn’t meet the threshold for officers to follow.
“For the police, it’s really a lose lose situation for them because I guarantee you that the officers that are dealing with this are extremely frustrated because they know their hands are tied. They want to go after this idiot, but they know they can’t because they’re bound by policy,” said Redford.
We reached out to CMPD and messaged the driver on Instagram about these videos, but have not received a response.
