Bridge Above I-40 To Close In Burke County For Rehabilitation

VALDESE, N.C. – A bridge over Interstate 40 in Burke County will close for 180 days for repairs and overall safety, the NCDOT said in a news release.

The bridge is on Malcolm Boulevard and Rutherford College Road, passing over I-40 at Exit 113. It can close as early as May 6th, but will be shut down for 180 days.

I-40 offramps at Exit 113 will stay open but drivers won’t be able to cross the bridge. U.S. 70 will be used as a primary detour route.

The NCDOT said this closure is to ensure the longevity and safety of the bridge. Crews will restore the piers and beams on the bridge before installing a new surface.

This closure is part of a $2.3 million contract that will include lane closures on I-40. This is so crews will have additional operational safety space to work on significant construction phases, the NCDOT said.

The project is set to complete by August of 2025.
