CHARLOTTE, N.C. – On Thursday, May 9, 2024, at 8 a.m., please join the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for the 2024 Bike 2 DC – Ride to Honor. Bike 2 DC – Ride to Honor kicks off a week of events for the observance of National Police Week 2024.
Since 2007, law enforcement officers from Charlotte and the surrounding area have gathered each May to ride bicycles 500 miles over four days from Charlotte to Washington, D.C. as part of the annual “Bike 2 DC – Ride to Honor” event. Each mile of the ride is a tribute to the fallen law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
The pre-ride ceremony will begin promptly at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) in Uptown (601 E. Trade St.) CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings will provide remarks ahead of the ride. The Ride to Honor will begin at the conclusion of the ceremony. Riders will be accompanied with a full police escort throughout their entire journey to Washington, D.C. This group will represent the CMPD in events next week in our nation’s capital beginning with the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Candlelight Vigil on Monday, May 13, 2024, on the National Mall.
In honor of fallen CMPD Officer Joshua Eyer, a member of the CMPD will ride Officer Eyer’s public order bike (POB) along the 500-mile journey. Officer Eyer’s Civil Emergency Unit (CEU) issued vest and helmet will be mounted on the bike.
