Police: Officer Involved Shooting Leaves Suspect Dead, Officer Injured
PINEVILLE, N.C. – A shooting involving an officer in Pineville ended with suspect dead and the officer injured, but not shot, according to Pineville Police.
The Pineville Police Department says this all started around 3 o’clock at Food Lion on Johnston Rd. for a suspect accused of shoplifting.
“We had an off duty sergeant that was in uniform, working off duty here for the Food Lion area, and encountered the suspect immediately. That sergeant was met with a level of resistance from the suspect at that point, which ensued into a physical altercation,” said Captain Corey Copely of the Pineville Police Department.
Police say the suspect then ran across the street to an apartment complex where a second altercation started in the parking lot. That’s when the officer opened fire, killing the suspect.
Johnston Rd was shutdown for several hours during rush hour while police investigated the scene.
During a news conference Tuesday evening, Pineville Police did not take questions.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is taking over the investigation.
The name of the person killed has not been identified.
