Indian Trail Town Council Argues Over Own Member’s Social Media Use

INDIAN TRAIL, N.C. — The Indian Trail Town Council met Tuesday night to discuss how members should be using their social media accounts.

The Council claims one of it’s own members, Todd Barber, has been using his personal Facebook account to spread misinformation.
Mayor Pro Tem, Dennis Gay, argues Barber has created several post that have misled town residents on actions the Council has taken. Gay pointed to a specific post in which Barber claimed the Council was planning to bulldoze existing buildings in the Town in order to bring in new business.
The Mayor Pro Tem says that post was completely untrue, along with other posts that have since been deleted.
During the meeting, Council members got very heated on the topic.
Indian Trail Mayor David Cohn said during the Council meeting after a back and forth exchange with Barber, “It didn’t have to get to this. I just want it to get better. I want things to get better away from the social media crap.”
The Council ended the discussion still in disagreement. Barber said “the public expects transparency, and they got it,” Referring to his past Facebook post.

Council members say there’s not much they can do to stop social media posting, but one member did suggest changes be made to the Council’s ethics handbook.
