Pineville Neighborhood Rejoices Over New Substation Site Change

PINEVILLE, N.C. — Many who live in a Pineville neighborhood now feel relieved after Town Council members changed their mind.

The initial plan to put an electric substation on Miller Road, right next to the McCollough neighborhood, a flea market, and a busy roadway is now no more, and many residents couldn’t be happier.

The Town Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to move the site of its controversial new electric substation away from a residential area and popular flea market.

Pineville officials stated the new plan is to build that substation just minutes away on Nations Ford Road. The town will have to purchase 1.44 acres somewhere on that roadway to build the station. Some who live in the McCollough neighborhood feel this is a much better idea.

Those who were against the Miller Road site location argue a substation on that road would cause higher traffic, and make the area less safe for the people who live nearby. Some also feel it would have interfered with those who frequent the nearby flea market.

One Pineville Council member said he feels this is a win for the town and it’s residents. He added it will allow the area to continue growing while also giving residents what they want to see.

Pineville will still need to purchase the new site and easements but leaders say they still expect the station to be up and running by September 2026.
