Confirmed Case Of Tuberculosis At Chester High School

CHESTER, S.C. – South Carolina health officials are investigating a case of tuberculosis that has been confirmed at Chester High School, according to the S.C. Department Of Health and Environmental Control.

“DHEC is working closely with school leadership to identify those associated with the school who may have been exposed to the TB germ and need to be tested,” a spokesperson said to WCCB in a statement. “DHEC and Chester High have begun a contact investigation and will contact all those who need to be tested.”

It is currently unknown whether a student or a staff member contracted the disease.

Tuberculosis stems from germs spread through the air from person to person. People with tuberculosis in their lungs may have a bad cough, chest pain or will cough up blood.

Active and inactive cases of tuberculosis can be treated, but the bacteria can be fatal if left untreated.
