Confirmed Case Of Tuberculosis At Chester High School

CHESTER, S.C. – South Carolina health officials are investigating a case of tuberculosis that has been confirmed at Chester High School, according to the S.C. Department Of Health and Environmental Control.

β€œDHEC is working closely with school leadership to identify those associated with the school who may have been exposed to the TB germ and need to be tested,” a spokesperson said to WCCB in a statement. β€œDHEC and Chester High have begun a contact investigation and will contact all those who need to be tested.”

It is currently unknown whether a student or a staff member contracted the disease.

Tuberculosis stems from germs spread through the air from person to person. People with tuberculosis in their lungs may have a bad cough, chest pain or will cough up blood.

Active and inactive cases of tuberculosis can be treated, but the bacteria can be fatal if left untreated.
