White House Drug Policy Director Travels To North Carolina To Discuss Efforts to Address The Overdose Epidemic And Save Lives

NORTH CAROLINA, U.S. – White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director Dr. Rahul Gupta will travel to North Carolina to discuss efforts to address the overdose epidemic and save lives.

Dr. Gupta will meet with North Carolinians on the frontlines of the overdose epidemic – including local law enforcement, public health leaders, and state officials – to discuss the Biden-Harris Administration’s historic actions and investments to tackle this epidemic, and highlight the critical partnerships needed at federal, state, and local levels to save lives.

On Wednesday, May 29, Dr. Gupta will join NPR Addiction Correspondent Brian Mann and North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein for a community forum on “A Conversation on Substance Use.” Dr. Gupta will discuss the Administration’s efforts to expand access to life-saving treatment for substance use disorder, disrupt the flow of illicit fentanyl, and support rural communities like Burke County.

The forum will be open press, followed by a media availability.

During his first State of the Union address, President Biden announced beating the overdose epidemic as a key pillar of his Unity Agenda, focused on issues where all Americans can come together and make progress for the nation.

Over the past three years, the Biden-Harris Administration has taken historic actions and made historic investments to strengthen public health efforts and crack down on illicit drug trafficking across the nation.

Background on Dr. Gupta

Dr. Rahul Gupta is the first medical doctor to serve as the Director of National Drug Control Policy. A board-certified internist, Dr. Gupta has been a practicing primary care physician for more than 25 years, and has served in private practice and public health in towns as small as 1,900 residents and cities as large as 25 million. Through his work as a physician, a state and local leader, an educator, and a senior leader of a national nonprofit organization, Dr. Gupta has dedicated his career to improving public health and public safety.
