Iron Station Neighborhood Getting A New Bridge After January Storm
IRON STATION – Clayton Nichols has lived on Amity Lane in Iron Station for over five years. When a big storm in January washed away part his street, he didn’t know what he and his family were going to do.
“I’ve got a little boy about to be ten years old this year wondering what we’re going to do, you know, get back forth, get to work, get him to school, get groceries,” said Nichols.
Now, they know what they’re going to do. A volunteer-based non profit called Mennonite Disaster Services helps communities across the country after natural disasters, and is in Iron Station to help with the bridge.
Philip Troyer with MDS tells WCCB’s Emma Mondo that 29 families were trapped on the other side of the culvert bridge collapse.
“To me,” he said, “it was felt the most needed because this is the first time we’ve ever had this many families that couldn’t get to their homes.”
The Mennonite Disaster Team says they’re still working to get this main bridge completed by June 22nd.
“Right now we got the footers done. We’ll do the stem walls tomorrow and then we leave it set and Monday we’ll put the beams on and put the decking on. So maybe by midweek next week it’ll be a basic bridge.”
