Bicyclist Killed In Southwest Charlotte Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A bicyclist was killed in a crash in southwest Charlotte on Wednesday night, according to MEDIC.

The accident happened on Steele Creek Road and Rigsby Road shortly before 6:30pm. When officers arrived on the scene, they found 58-year-old Mihael Stegne, lying in the roadway unresponsive, according to CMPD.

Officers say the driver remained on the scene to speak with officers. Stegne was pronounced dead on the scene due to the injuries he sustained in the collision, according to CMPD.

Police say the initial investigation indicates that Stegne was riding his bicycle across Steele Creek Road outside of the designated cross walk when he was struck by a vehicle traveling in the southbound lanes with the flow of traffic. Police say Stegne was not wearing a helmet.

Excessive speed does not appear to be a contributing factor, according to CMPD. Police say Stegne’s toxicology report is pending.
