Scorching Start to Summer
Models have areas southeast of I-85 flirting with the triple digits by next weekend.
Happy Father’s Day! It may be Dad’s big day, but Mother Nature is the one cranking up the heat as we inch closer to summer. Scattered clouds along with Isolated showers and storms will keep things slightly cooler in the mid-to-upper 80s on Monday, but the 90s should regain a stranglehold on the Carolinas by midweek. A powerful ridge of high pressure over the East Coast will only become more dominant as the first day of summer arrives on Thursday, Mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid-to-lower 90s arrive by the end of the workweek as rain chances scrape the bottom.
Dangerous heat is possible by next weekend. Many variables in the forecast can and will change, but models are trending toward near-triple-digit temperatures on Saturday and Sunday around the Queen City and southeastward. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen if spending prolonged time outdoors this week; take indoor breaks when you can. Air quality may also suffer this week due to the heat and lack of rain – all the more reason to stay indoors when possible. We’ll also want to watch for a potential tropical system near the Southeast late this week, although it may stay well south of the Carolinas.
