The fire was first reported shortly after 8am in the elevator shaft associated with a FAA Control Tower that is under demolition. Investigators say the fire was started due to molten slag from hot work that dropped down the elevator shaft onto piled foam insulation.
Four construction workers were trapped by the smoke, according to CFD. Due to the circumstances, CFD called a second alarm on the fire, according to a news release.
Officials say the fire was under control in 10 minutes and all four construction workers self evacuated and did not need medical attention.
The fire remains under investigation. Normal airport operations were not affected by the incident, according to CFD.
