“This Is All We Have Left”; Statesville Mother Of Six Reacts To Housefire
STATESVILLE – A local family is working to put their life back together with the help of GoFundMe after a kitchen fire destroyed their home. Jasmine King Jones and her six children were not home during the fire, but she tells WCCB Charlotte’s Emma Mondo there is one item lost in the fire that is irreplaceable.
Ash and debris still litter the home on Hidden Lakes Road in Statesville.
“I was self-cleaning the stove decided to tell the children we’re going to go out and let the stove clean for a little bit, and then we’re going to go to the park, hang out,” said Jones.
She says she came home last Monday to see four fire trucks outside and flames shooting from her home. She says the stove self cleaning spray she used mixed with the the bug foggers she set up in her kitchen and caught fire.
The hardest part, she says, is losing keepsakes from one of her children, Nolan, who passed away a few years ago from a heart condition.
He would have been five this year.
“The day he passed away, they did a clay of his feet and his hands,” Jones said, “and we always kept the memory keepsake up at the top of the cabinet, up above the refrigerator, and it completely melted. So, his stuff is completely destroyed.”
She took WCCB inside to see the damage.
She tells Mondo that memento is the one thing she wished could have been saved in the flames.
“I would actually go and look and it’s keepsake if I wanted to smell him. His birthday actually coming up in a couple of weeks, I would go smell it, but this is all I have left.”
Despite heartbreak, Jones remains strong for her kids.
“Going through this process again with losing everything and starting over is really, really it’s a lot to take in. But I’m strong. I’ve seen worse.”
