NEWTON, N.C. – 33-year-old Mathew Roop has been indicted by Catawba County Grand Jury after being suspected of supplying narcotics to a man, resulting in his death, according to a news release.
The release states that deputies found 35-year-old Brian Topping deceased in his residence due to an overdose in October 2023 after an autopsy revealed a mixture of narcotics in Topping’s system.
After an investigation, Catawba County Sheriff’s investigators identified Roop as the suspect who supplied Roop the narcotics.
The Catawba County Grand Jury indicted Roop for:
- Death by distribution
- Second degree murder
- Selling or delivering schedule II controlled substances
“Our work to bring these distributors of death to justice is continuing,” said Catawba County Sheriff Brown. “Through the close partnership with our District Attorney’s Office we are making a difference. Our sentiments are with the Topping family.”
