New Club Leads Residents To Sleep With Ear Plugs In Plaza Midwood

PLAZA MIDWOOD – Neighbors in Plaza Midwood are frustrated with a new club that they say plays loud music well into the late night hours.

Ron Wolfe has lived in Plaza Midwood for over 30 years. He has seen plenty of businesses move into the neighborhood, including the new Eden of Plaza bar on Pecan Avenue that opened in the fall. He tells WCCB’s Emma Mondo he first noticed the noise around two months ago.

“I’m really surprised because I didn’t think the new owner was going to be active in music,” said Wolfe, “and that’s not the case.”

The city of Charlotte noise ordinance indicates music must be kept to 60 decibels between 9pm and 2am Sunday through Thursday, and between 11pm and 2am Friday and Saturday.

“It’s affecting my sleep,” said Wolfe. “I’ve learned to kind of drop off to sleep, but I don’t think it’s as restful.”

With the rooftop bar now opened at Eden here on Pecan Avenue, neighbors all around the area tell Mondo about the extensive measures they’re taking just to try and stay asleep.

Emily Scott lives less than half a mile from the new club with her husband and two month old baby girl.

“Our house is built in 1908 like she was not made for a nightclub scene,” she said. “We actually ended up getting earplugs this past weekend when they opened up the rooftop. It was just a little too much with the bass, definitely makes our midnight feedings interesting when we still have music going in the background.”

She tells Mondo she called the police last weekend about the noise after the earplugs and noise proof curtains weren’t helping. She also messaged Eden of Plaza on Instagram last Thursday asking them to turn it down. She was surprised then they replied, saying they are still working out the kinks and will be more mindful. They also offered her a 100 dollar gift card.

WCCB reached out to Eden but did not hear back.

“I hope they’re just like respectful of it now that like hopefully they have probably received multiple complaints from a ton of neighbors,” said Scott.
