Small Town Of Stallings Seeing Big Growth

STALLINGS, NC — Just between Matthews and Indian Trail sits the town of Stallings. If it wasn’t for the water tower with the towns name, you may not know the tiny town exists, but you should.

While Stallings might not have quite the population of the surrounding towns, it is growing as fast as them at 6.8% in the last three years

“I think change is inevitable, and I like being part of making it change in a good way,” said Stallings’ mayor pro tem David Scholl.

Change is happening all around town. A new park, a new hospital, and plenty of new homes. Many of which are townhomes for the young professionals and houses for the 55+ community. Both of which Scholl says was lacking for years.

“There was nothing for our young kids or older folks to to stay and live in this town that we love,” Scholl said of the need for more housing.

While many cities are focused on going younger, Stallings seems to be embracing an older crowd.

“They don’t use our roads during rush hour as much, nearly as much and of course the schools aren’t impacted by the over 55, so that’s huge,” Scholl said of the benefits of an older generation on the town.

Scholl believes the close proximity to the expressway is one reason many are moving into the town of nearly 18,000.

Scholl also points to plots of land set for new housing that sits empty while they wait for the county to add more sewer capacity. The wait is turning away developers.

“We’re losing 500,000 square feet of commercial space is not coming because of sewer capacity. They’re interested companies checking us out and saying we’re not going to have our permits and everything in place in time before that capacity number is hit. So we’re going to go elsewhere,” explained Scholl.

Scholl says they are on the county’s list for additional sewer capacity. He estimates another two to three years before the town reaches capacity.
