Police say they arrested Weston Vonegidy on July 2nd for the shooting that happened during a youth baseball game on the campus of Wingate University.

Vonegidy has been charged with having a gun on an educational property, assault by pointing a gun, going armed to the terror of people, felony possession of a schedule I controlled substance, felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance, possession with intent to manufacture/sell/distribute a schedule I controlled substance and maintaining a dwelling for the sale of controlled substances.

WINGATE, N.C. – Wingate University went into lockdown Friday night after a shooting at the baseball field, according to the school’s alert system.

It happened around 7 p.m.  and an alert was sent out an hour later about police investigating a shooting at the university’s baseball field.

One person was taken into custody, and police believe the shooting doesn’t involve a member of the Wingate University community, according to the post on X.

The lockdown was lifted around 8:25 p.m. and there is no longer a threat to the Wingate campus. Officials ask those to avoid the area near the baseball field while police continue to investigate the incident.
