Scorching Start to Workweek

Our next shot at significant rain - and cooler air - arrives by midweek.

Sweltering heat has arrived once again across the Carolinas on July’s second Sunday, and temperatures crank up another notch as we head into the workweek. Highs will top out near 100º across the Piedmont and Foothills on Monday as a tropical ridge of high pressure continues to build across the Southeast. A few pop-up storms are possible in the afternoon, giving us our only respite from the torrid temperatures. Expect more of the same on Tuesday before a rainmaking system approaches from the northwest by midweek.

The incoming cold front encroaches upon the Carolinas by Thursday, but rain chances will rise significantly on Wednesday. Despite increasing clouds and storm coverage, highs should still make it into the mid-90s around the Metro for our Hump Day. A few storms through the latter half of the week may pack gusty winds and small hail, but the overall severe threat appears low at the moment. Medium-range models continue to show the incoming system stalling near our area by the end of the week, which should keep meaningful rain chances around through the weekend. Temperatures should also cool significantly by Friday – highs will likely end up in the 70s and 80s across the board as we head into next weekend.
