Stormy Pattern Continues

While the overall severe risk remains low, the strongest storms will pack gusty winds, frequent lightning, and small hail.

We’ve made it to July’s penultimate weekend, but storms aren’t taking the day off anytime soon. While the rain has largely steered clear of the WCCB Charlotte viewing area so far this afternoon, storm chances go on the ascent overnight into the second half of the weekend. We’ll want to watch out for a few strong cells packing gusty winds, frequent lightning, and small hail, but the overall severe risk remains low. Temperatures will remain below average in the 70s and 80s across the board as clouds and storms smother the Carolinas. A few spots that stay sunnier and drier may crack 90º, especially east of the Metro, but most communities will see more gray than blue this weekend.

The stormy pattern continues into the workweek ahead as the front that’s been stalled over our area for the past several days slowly lifts northward. Highs will creep closer to 90º by midweek as more sunshine claws back into the forecast, but scattered afternoon storms will quickly cut down any gains temperatures make throughout the day. Another shot of energy toward the back half of the week will allow rain chances to surge again, hopefully putting a major dent in our drought. Activity in the tropics remains muted as Saharan dust grips major development zones in the Atlantic.
