Two More Charlotte Breweries To Close This Weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC — Restaurants, coffee shops and breweries, Charlotte has plenty of them.

There’s almost 40 breweries in the city, but there will be two less after this weekend.

A weekly Friday tradition for Mike Moriarty and his family at Devil’s Logic Brewing. Some stories, a few laughs, and a couple of pints .

As hard as we may try to keep them going, traditions usually come to an end. Sadly, that’s the case for the Moriarty’s Friday night.

“It’s just been a fun place. We’re going to be sad,” said Moriarty of the brewery closing.

After five years of being the go to spot for craft beer in Charlotte’s Elizabeth neighborhood, Devil’s Logic will pour it’s last beer Friday night.

“Just bummed, you know, because I’ve seen some other breweries closing, but this one definitely was a little bit more near and dear to me,” said customer Nicole Angtuaco.

They aren’t the only ones to close up shop this weekend. Frothy Beard Brewing is shutting down it’s South End location Sunday. They can now be added to list of breweries to close in Charlotte this year. Joining Blue Blaze Brewing and Weathered Souls Brewing Company.

“I don’t believe that we have to be too concerned about over saturation in Charlotte,” said Lisa Parker.

Parker is the Executive Director of the North Carolina Brewers Guild. Parker points to some of the top craft beer cities like Asheville and Portland, Oregon. They have 17 and 18 breweries for every 50,000 people. Charlotte only has 2 breweries for every 50,000.

“You’re going to see in a healthy market openings and closures. And the craft beer industry is no different,” explained Parker.

Parker blames a variety of other factors including inflation, rising cost of manufacturing and skyrocketing rent costs as reasons why a brewery fails. Blue Blaze Brewing closed early this year after a dispute with the landlord.

“I’ve had breweries tell me that their rent prices, when it’s come time for renewal, have gone up 300%,” Parker said.
