Former Republicans Launch ‘Republicans For Harris’ Campaign In NC

A group of former republicans say they’re voting for Kamala Harris for President in 2024.

The grassroots effort ‘Republicans for Harris’ has launched across the country. Locally Former North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Bob Orr and Former Mecklenburg County GOP Board Member Michael Tucker are a part of the group calling on fellow republicans to reject Donald Trump.

Trump failed Republicans, he failed Americans, and he failed our country when he was serving as president,” Former Justice Orr said. “A second Trump term would be an even greater danger to our democracy and Constitution than the first.”

Orr says Trump’s rhetoric will continue to divide the country.

Donald Trump does not have what it takes to unify and heal the country nor does he have the inclination to do so,” Former Justice Orr said. “Instead, Trump engages in extreme rhetoric that promotes division, hate, and violence in this country.”

A new poll from Bloomberg surveyed 706 registered voters in North Carolina from July 24th to 28th with a 4% margin of error. The majority of voters surveyed identified as republican.

The poll asked voters to choose between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump. Forty

eight percent of voters said they would choose Trump and 46% of voters said they would choose Harris.

Dr. Hassan Crockett, a political science professor at Livingstone College says early polls aren’t always reliable.

There are opinions that will change during the campaign season. The Harris campaign, for example, they haven’t had any debates yet, and that can have an impact on what the preferences are for registered voters or people who plan on voting.”

Dr. Crockett says it’s not uncommon for Democrats to vote Republican or Republicans to vote Democrat depending on their preferred candidates, but he says the support for Harris is different.

I think what’s unusual this time is the organized effort. I think you have so many Republicans behind Harris who are organizing for Harris, as opposed to just doing it on an individual basis or less organized,” Dr. Crockett said.

The Bloomberg poll also asked respondents about the single most important issue when deciding how to vote in the presidential election. The most common answers were the economy, immigration and democracy.

Some republicans supporting Harris say they don’t always agree with her policies, but they see the potential for compromise.

Elect a leader that you may disagree with on policies, and you can go to the table with and talk about them, but give us the time we need to heal and rebuild as a party,” Geoff Duncan, Former Georgia Lieutenant Governor said.

Republicans for Harris plans to host events in the southeast region leading up to the November election.

The Trump campaign did not return requests for comment on the Republicans for Harris efforts.
