Heavy Rain Threatens Dam In Matthews

MATTHEWS, N.C. – Concern for people that live in a Matthews neighborhood, as the rain from Tropical Storm Debby could cause a nearby dam to breach.

The neighborhood is off Idlewild Road. Crews have been at that dam all day trying to pump water out of it.

If that dam fails, 16 homes are at risk of flooding. 

“If it undermines it underneath, the whole dam would break,” Matthews Fire Department Chief Peter Blake said. “And then you have a football-sized area with water that dumps straight down.”

Emergency officials say they will provide updates throughout the night.
