NASCAR Driver Chris Buescher Surprises Queen City Pet Owners For National Dog Day

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – More than 100 lucky pet owners across the Queen City received a special surprise on National Dog Day in the form of financial help to offset the cost of veterinary care, as well as pet packs of toys, treats and other goodies for their furry friends.

The surprise took place at three veterinary hospitals across the region on Monday, Aug. 26: Charlotte Companion Animal Hospital, Fullwood Animal Hospital, and Ballantyne Veterinary Clinic. Veterinarians and their staff also received an appreciation gift from Fifth Third.

“I see firsthand how much our clients love their pets—they’re truly a part of their families. Fifth Third’s surprise event was an incredible act of kindness, and I’m deeply grateful to them for making it possible. By helping cover some of the financial burdens, they’ve lifted a huge weight off the shoulders of so many pet parents. This support means everything to owners who want to give their pets the best care possible, and it’s a reminder of the amazing community we have here in the Matthews and Mint Hill area,” said Dr. Christy Medrano, Owner of Fullwood Animal Hospital.

The cost of pet care has reached an all-time high in 2024, with pet households estimated to spend an average of $1,733, according to the U.S. Labor of Bureau Statistics – making it difficult for some pet owners to keep up with expenses.

To help alleviate this burden, pet owners who received care at select Fifth Third partner veterinary hospitals on Monday, Aug. 26 were surprised with $167 gift cards, and their furry friends also received a pet pack of treats, toys and other goodies.

“We know that responsible pet ownership can have significant financial obligations, and we want to help,” said Fifth Third Regional President Lee Fite. “At Fifth Third we put 166.7% into everything we do for our customers and supporting them on National Dog Day is just one example of how we can help build healthier, happier communities from the paws up.”

Fite was joined at Fullwood Animal Hospital on Monday by NASCAR driver Chris Buescher of RFK Racing, an avid animal lover who has three dogs, including two rescues, and one rescue cat.

“Pets are family, and there’s nothing my wife and I wouldn’t do for my dogs and cat. I’m thrilled to join Fifth Third for this opportunity to bring a little joy and relief to other pet parents. Knowing that we can surprise them and help cover just one day of vet bills might seem small, but for those who care deeply about their pets, it can make all the difference. It’s about spreading the love and support that our pets give us every single day,” said Buescher.
