Man Killed In Car Crash Wanted For Stealing Tires At Airport
CHARLOTTE, N.C.Β βΒ A man killed in a car crash last Thursday was found to be the suspect wanted for stealing multiple parts from cars parked at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
From August 18-20, officers responded multiple times to Old Dowd Road and Josh Birmingham Parkway to investigate a series of larcenies.
Police said they located three BMW sedans with wheels and tires removed on the driverβs side.
Days later on August 22nd, the state highway patrol attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding and a seatbelt violation, but the driver refused to stop and a chase ensued.
During the chase, the driver lost control, ran off the road and struck a tree near Freedom Drive and Fred D. Alexander Boulevard, officials said. The suspect, 33-year-old Alexander Komthongpane, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following an investigation, police determined that Komthongpane was the man accused of stealing motor vehicle parts at the airport. Additionally, the wheels on Komthongpaneβs vehicle were stolen from the BMW sedans at the airport, police said.
Komthongpane was known to police for stealing catalytic converters and other motor vehicle larceny attempts across Charlotte.
