CMS Leaders Say District Is Making History With Newly Released 2023-34 Data
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Every year around this time, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools gets a big data dump from the state, telling them how students performed academically the previous school year. This year, district leaders are excited about what the data revealed about CMS’ 175 schools.
“83.4% of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools met or exceeded growth, the highest number in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools history,” says CMS Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer Beth Thompson.
She continues, “For the first time in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools history, more schools were removed from the state low performing designation list than were added.”
Thompson shared what she called “headline results” with reporters at a news conference Wednesday. She said, “We had an increase in the 2324 graduation rate, an increase to 84%.” She continues, “This is what our work is all about. Graduating students for post-secondary success.”
CMS’ graduation rate is still not where it was pre-pandemic. Thompson calls last year’s improvement a positive trend. “But I want to be honest, it is not where we want to be,” says Thompson.
She also touched on school growth, noting that CMS is still tracking recovery from the pandemic. She says 146 out of 175 met or exceeded growth. Thompson says, “This is the largest number of schools meeting or exceeding growth in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
