Bloomberg Poll: 60% of NC Residents Say Immigration Very Important For Election
CHARLOTTE, NC — The country seems to be quite divided on the topic of immigration.
“It seems like they’re just letting people cross the border,” said Charlotte resident Willie Burnett.
“I think other parts of the country deal with the immigration problem more than we do here, and it’d be a higher priority. It’s something important for the country as a whole. But for Charlotte in general, I just want things to be more affordable like they were before,” Charlotte resident Stephen Davis explained.
Chris Cooper is a Political Science Professor at Western Carolina University. He says other than the economy, border control has been the point of emphasis for the Republican party.
“People tend to trust Democrats more, for example, on education, fairly or unfairly. It’s just kind of what we see on average, right? We call this issue ownership,” Cooper continues, “immigration, the Republicans own that issue. That is an issue where people tend to trust the Republican Party,
Less than two months before the election, it’s the issue Republicans will continue to question Vice President Kamala Harris on.
“She’s been hit pretty hard on immigration policy and in some ways harder, I think, than Biden was getting hit. So what that suggests to me is that the Republican Party is even more likely to lean into immigration,” Cooper explained.
A Bloomberg poll from earlier this summer asked more than 700 North Carolinians how important immigration is to deciding the next president, 60% answered very important.
