CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Chandler Craig, a former detention officer with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office, has settled her gender discrimination lawsuit against Sheriff Garry McFadden.
The lawsuit alleged that Craig was treated less favorably than the male detention officers after an alleged incident of excessive force. Craig was terminated and charged with simple assault, which was later dismissed, while the other detention officers were involved in more severe incidents, such as throwing punches, chokeholds and use of tasers on inmates, were not terminated or publicly charged. The incident took place in September 2021.
As part of the settlement, Sheriff McFadden has agreed to rescind Craig’s termination, amend her employment file and pay an amount that exceeds her lost ages during the year following her termination.
