‘I Don’t Think I Realized How Close I Came to Dying’: Boone Mudslide Caught on Camera
A wall of water, mud, and debris rushed down the hill at incredible speed, barely missing Rachel Mosher and her husband before slamming into her parentsβ home.
WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — It all happened in an instant.
βAt the time, I definitely donβt think I realized just how close I came to dying,” says Rachel Mosher.
Mosher and her husband were staying at their cabin on her parentsβ property northwest of Boone when they noticed something out of place.
βI was outside videoing because there was water coming down outside our cabin,” Mosher explains, “And I was like, βOh, thereβs not normally a river there. That shouldnβt be there.β And then I caught the mudslide on video.β
A wall of water, mud, and debris rushed down the hill at incredible speed, barely missing Rachel and her husband before slamming into her parentsβ home – while her parents and her grandma were inside.
βThat entire part of the house is flattened. Itβs total destruction,” says Mosher, “My husbandβs brand-new car was the one that you see in the video on top of the roof.β
Fortunately, her parents and grandma were in a different part of the house and got out unscathed.
βOur cabin was fine. We got a little mud inside, but weβve still got a warm place,” Mosher says, “And my parents; they still have their bedroom and the kitchen and living areas.β
Her video of the mudslide has been seen by millions, with many people commenting on how she immediately comforts her husband after the mudslide passes.
βMy immediate response was just caring for him,” Mosher explains.
βI love him more than anything and I would do everything that I could to make sure heβs okay.β
Unfortunately, Mother Nature wasnβt done with them just yet.
βThere was actually a second mudslide about an hour after the first one that came through, and that crushed a couple more of our cars and washed away our road,” Mosher laments.
Despite all of this damage and destruction, Mosher is keeping a positive attitude.
βThereβs just so many things to be thankful for, which sounds crazy, because our house did get knocked out in a mudslide,” says Mosher.
βHaving all the extra stuff stripped away and seeing the priority and what really is important is the people. Thatβs what we still have.β
And she says this terrible thing is a blessing in disguise, bringing so many people together.
βWeβve all lost power, water, and everything, but they little that we do have, everyone is sharing. And I think thatβs just amazing.β
Mosher says insurance won’t cover all of her family’s costs. Consider donating to their GoFundMe HERE.
