TSA Stops 100th Firearm At CLT Airport In 2024

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Transportation Security Administration detected the 100th firearm this year at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after a man allegedly attempted to carry a loaded firearm onto an airplane on Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, a TSA officer detected a firearm in a man’s carry-on bag at checkpoint one. Police were immediately alerted to the location and confirmed that a .380 caliber firearm was loaded with eight rounds of ammunition.

“In addition to the serious safety risk these incidents pose, they can also slow down the screening process for all passengers when we’re forced to temporarily close down a lane as a result of the firearm detection,” said Beth Walker, TSA’s Federal Security Director at CLT.

The 64-year-old man was cited on a state charge, officials said.

This is the 100th firearm detected at Charlotte Douglas in 2024. That number has gradually risen the past three years – 82 in 2021, and 96 in 2022 and 2023.
