West Iredell High School Prepares For Final Game, Bag Restrictions
First-year coach Sean Fitzgerald and his players are excited for the extra opportunity to play in front of their home crowd.
STATESVILLE, N.C. —Β βWeβve had three good days of practice here, and we feel good about it,” says Sean Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald is wrapping up his first year as head coach with the West Iredell High School football team.
βIβm excited just to be a part of a fanbase and a community that loves football and supports this group here,” the former Mars Hill standout says.
While the Warriors wonβt make the playoffs this year, they are adding an extra week to their season after Hurricane Helene canceled a game back in September.
βI think anytime you can play past Daylight Saving Time is a win,” says Fitzgerald.
And his players are excited for the extra opportunity to play in front of their home crowd.
βIβm so glad,” says Ex-Avier Peet, a junior safety and wide receiver, “More people can watch. You can show off your potential, basically make a name for yourself.β
Itβs been a season of change – West Iredell has gone through five head coaches in the past 10 seasons – and there will be another adjustment this week. Fans wonβt be allowed to bring outside bags inside the stadium. The policy, implemented county-wide, is one made in the name of safety.
Additional Safety Protocols Issues for Athletic Events
βI think itβs an awesome idea,” says Neal Patterson, who is the father of a player on the team.
But football parents like Patterson donβt seem to mind.
βI donβt think itβs a big deal. I think itβs safe. I think it ensures the safety of everybody who comes through the door.β
