Christmas spirit in full swing at 27th annual Concord Christmas Tree Lighting

CONCORD, N.C. — The countdown to Christmas is underway in Cabarrus County.

It hasn’t snowed in Concord for nearly three years, but thousands packed into downtown Friday night to spread glad tidings and holiday cheer.

“I just love sharing with the families that gather here and our students, and enjoying the season,” says Wendell Rummage, “It’s just an amazing time.”

Rummage has been emceeing the Concord Christmas Tree Lighting – now in its 27th year – for over two decades running. He says events like these are important for strengthening community ties.

“It doesn’t matter who you are, what your bank account looks like,” Rummage adds, This is a great time to come together and share.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by everyone in attendance.

“It brings unity to the community, and, of course, it just brings peace,” says Cherita Thomas. Thomas’ son sang onstage with the Royal Oaks School of the Arts choir Friday night.

First-time attendee Michael Lindsay agrees.

“Especially in times like this, after the election, people need to come together,” says Lindsay, “It’s going to be a great Christmas. Everybody’s going to enjoy themselves.”

And enjoy themselves, they will.

“From now until New Year’s, it’ll be solid partying and having a big ol’ time,” beams 60-year Concord resident Buell Little.

“Family, friends, that’s what it’s all about.”

It may not be Thanksgiving quite yet, but in Concord, they’re already wishing you a very merry Christmas.

The 96th annual Concord Christmas Parade takes place Saturday at 2:30 pm. Admission is free for all who attend – and you may even catch your favorite WCCB Charlotte team members there.
